Coronavirus and the Stock Market

With news of the coronavirus spreading and the death toll in China sadly increasing – stock market volatility picked up and stocks fell. Where do stocks go from here?

As we closed out last week, stock market direction aligned with headlines and reports on the coronavirus. Aside from the tragic human cost, as the number of cases increase and the number of dead rises, stocks fall at an increasing pace, volatility picks up, and interest rates fall.

So, as we enter the last week of the month, the focus will remain on the coronavirus. The direction of the market this week most likely depends if the coronavirus continues to spread or becomes contained. Thus far, emerging markets have felt the brunt of the sell-off, while bonds have protected some of that downside.
